We know that schools play an important role in helping children learn to read. But the community plays an equally important role in ways that go well beyond learning the alphabet or how to read words. Researcher Munro Richardson is here to tell us how.
With a fresh analysis of data, he’ll show that improving literacy involves two distinct challenges stacked on top of each other: short-term bottlenecks in foundational, “constrained” skills and a much larger, longer-lasting divide in “unconstrained” skills like executive function, vocabulary, and background knowledge.
Munro will challenge how we think about what a “reading skill” even is, why many of our usual interventions fall short, and why schools can’t improve literacy alone. Meet Munro Richardson
Munro Richardson is a self-avowed data geek and research nerd who claims to read academic papers the way most people read fiction. With 25 years of experience in the social and philanthropic sectors—including leading Read Charlotte in Charlotte, NC—Munro specializes in turning complex research into actionable insights and tools. As Editor and Researcher of Unconstrained Kids, a Substack devoted to the science of skill-building, he works as a knowledge broker and field catalyst to redefine how we understand and build the skills that power success in school and life—and narrow the achievement gap.
Munro holds degrees from the University of Kansas (Phi Beta Kappa), Harvard University (Mellon Fellow), Oxford University (Rhodes Scholar), and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
He is co-author with Samantha Cleaver of Read With Me: Engaging Your Young Child in Active Reading (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018). A bookworm from an early age, one of his favorite childhood books is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.
Munro is married to his high school sweetheart, Teresa, and has three daughters.
